Race Warm-Up Trainer Starting to emerge from the recesses of Pat's laboratory is a new portable race warmup trainer. First shown at the CycloCross World Championships in Louisville, January 2013 it became an instant Expo sensation! Bike Rumor did a very nice write up!
So, here's a few details. It folds out and locks the front forks so you don't have to mess with changing your rear skewer, horsing around with cassette calibration, etc. With two large diameter rear drums, each sharing the power load, it's VERY tire-friendly so you can warm up with your race tires with no worries. Remarkably stable when the bike is mounted, it folds up to about 11 lbs (that's our target) and is easy to carry, and legal to stow in the overhead compartment of most major aircraft WITH your race gear. The reason it exists is the progressive resistance technology developed for our full-size roller and the mini-rollers. The warm-up trainer will deliver the same kind of power curve roughly equivalent to level-road. Want one now? Sorry.. we've got some work left to do. The frame will become mostly aluminum, with steel where needed in structural areas. The drums will be finely tuned for this application, with a) inertia optimized for road performance (too little is too choppy, too much doesn't work the "dead spot" for 360 degrees of smooth power) b) highly effective cooling to keep the drum and tire temperatures only warm-to-the-touch for the most powerful athletes and c) optimum power curve for race warm-ups. Tandem Rollers, Team Rollers Yup.. we do crazy stuff like this. You may be surprised, but a tandem roller IS really easy to ride. Easier than a single roller. I have no idea why. The 4-man roller is just...plain...intimidating to the opposing team. If you're interested in any crazy idea you'd like to try out .. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
